drone program is this man, john brennan, a senior official at the cia and head of the national counterterrorism center during the bush presidency. reportedly, barack obama considered offering him the top job at the cia in 2008, but public opposition caused brennan to withdraw from consideration. obama kept brennan on as an adviser, and last year, when brennan became the first official to formally acknowledge that the drone program even existed, he again encountered protests. >> how many people are you willing to sacrifice? why are you lying to the american people and not saying how many innocents have been killed? >> thank you ma'am for expressing your views. we will have time for questions following the presentation. >> i speak out on behalf of tariq aziz. a 16-year-old in pakistan who was killed because he wanted to document the drone strikes. >> now, despite brennan's past notoriety, obama officially has nominated him to head the cia. this time, there's been little criticism of the decision. so, we'll watch brennan's upcoming confirmation hearings to see if any congressional

for new choice of cia director, john brennan. john brennan was once the deputy cia director. he is now president obama's counterterrorism director at the white house. but if he is to run the cia for president obama, john brennan is first going to have to face questions on thursday about some of what michael isikoff turned up here on this program last night. a justice department white paper elaborating the administration's reasoning for why it thinks it is legal to kill american citizens on the president's say so. or actually, on the say so of an informed high level official of the u.s. government. so maybe that's the president, but maybe that's somebody else. michael isikoff's scoop ended up at "the new york times" today and "the washington post" and "the hill" and slate and salon and ap to name a few. it was everywhere. and then at a press conference today, the attorney general was asked about it. >> last night nbc reported a white paper that was prepared by the justice department undated, unsigned about the legal -- the legal pinnacles for targeting americans overseas. could you plea

's pick to head the cia went before senators at his confirmation hearing. john brennan strongly defended the program of which he's been called the chief architect. >> i think there is a misimpression on the part of some american people who believe that we take strikes to punish terrorists for past transgressions, nothing could be further from the truth. we only take such actions as a last resort to save lives when there's no other alternative to taking an action that's going to mitigate that threat. so we need to make sure there's an understanding and the people that were standing up here today, i think they really have a misunderstanding of what we do as a government and the care that we take and the agony that we go through to make sure that we do not have any collateral injuries or deaths. >> well, brennan's testimony had been interrupted there you see by color pink five times by anti-war protesters called code pink. polls show for the most part those protesters out there and they're legitimate, represent a small minority of the country. most americans back using drones to carry out t

. >> the john brennan nominee, described it as self-defense, okay? a drone, a drone against, you know, an american. and do you have any problem with that one? >> let's go back to the two parts. first the hypocrisy argument. john brennan and all of his ilk of folks who were criticizing the left, criticizing president bush for going into iraq on preemption, on self-defense before we were attacked and the left has been going for eight years, you know, bush lied, people die, all based on the issue of preemption. and here we have now, this administration who is against all of this, now saying, the same rationale that president bush-- >> hypocrisy is one issue and i give that one to you, but are you not troubled by the fact and this is also sort of looped into hypocrisy. a new discussion with the obama administration wanting to bring gitmo to new york and give them trials where they have lawyers, rights to appeal. cross examination, decided by a jury and yet here under this government program, a high government official, i don't know who that is. judge, jury, executioner of americans. >> ag
